📍 Mary River National Park NT 0822
The Mary River Wetlands, about 100km east of Darwin, are one of the most pristine wetland ecosystems in Australia and home to a staggering density of saltwater crocodiles, migratory birds, barramundi, and other wildlife. Boat tours on the Mary River offer dramatic crocodile encounters — these are big animals in the wild — plus jacanas walking on lilies, jabiru storks, and countless other Top End species. Barramundi fishing tours are also available for older kids. Best visited in the dry season (May–October) when wildlife concentrates around the floodplains. Wet season can offer spectacular birdlife and lush scenery but access may be limited.
